“Agay is a paradise where even the dust is fragrant.” –

Agay, located in one of the most beautiful bays on the coast between Cap Dramont and Pointe de la Baumette, is the natural gateway to the Estérel mountain range. It offers three fine sandy beaches and a landscaped terrace area with access to the sea via the rocks. Very sheltered, it was popular with sailors (Agay means “favourable” in Greek).

With the arrival of the railway in 1860, many artists stopped in Agay: the painter Louis Valtat, the composer Vincent d’Indy, and the writers Guy de Maupassant and Maurice Donnay stayed there, as did Saint-Exupéry (be sure not to miss the fountain dedicated to The Little Prince, erected in his honour). Albert Cohen set part of the action of Belle du Seigneur there.

Well sheltered between Cap Dramont and Pointe de la Baumette, the Bay of Agay forms a natural gateway to the Estérel mountain range.

Its layout also makes it a place much appreciated by sailors (Agay also means “favourable” in Greek). You will appreciate its three fine sandy beaches, the summit of Rastel and its red rocks, overlooking the bay and offering breathtaking panoramic views.

Agay also has a small harbour with 166 berths, some of which are available for visiting boats, as well as an organised anchorage area.

SAINT-RAPHAËL

TOWN CENTRE AND OLD TOWN

The narrow, shaded streets that make up the old town are what remain of the former “village district”, where the farmers of Saint-Raphaël used to live.

Every day, this district hosts a flower and vegetable market where you will find only typically Provençal produce.

A little further on stands the Romanesque church, a listed historic monument, which was enlarged in the 18th century but originally built in the 12th century! Its former presbytery now houses the Saint-Raphaël Archaeological Museum. Its 22-metre watchtower, dating from around the 14th century, offers a splendid panoramic view.

The “Marine Quarter”, once frequented by the town’s fishermen, gradually transformed into a seaside resort. A casino, as well as numerous villas, were built there to create a truly attractive town centre.

Points of interest

Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Victoire: a building constructed by Pierre Aublé between 1882 and 1889, representative of the Romanesque-Byzantine style that was very popular during the Belle Époque.

Museum of Prehistory and Underwater Archaeology: it contains collections from the local heritage, prehistoric artefacts, as well as Roman antiquities recovered from underwater excavations.

Louis de Funès Museum: more than 350 items are displayed, including personal photographs, film and on-set photographs, drawings, particularly by Louis de Funès, letters such as those from Jean Anouilh, as well as film excerpts, some of which have never been seen before. A digital museum tour is available.

Promenade des Bains: this promenade was created between 1880 and 1882 under the name “Terrasse des Bains”. It can be considered the beginning of the tourist era in Saint-Raphaël.

Jardin Bonaparte: situated in an elevated position overlooking the bay and the old harbour, with 20,000 m² of gardens. Its central section is laid out as a public garden with play areas for children
