“Agay is a paradise where even the dust is fragrant.” –
Agay, located in one of the most beautiful bays on the coast between Cap Dramont and Pointe de la Baumette, is the natural gateway to the Esterel massif. It offers three fine sandy beaches and a landscaped terraced area with access to the sea via the rocks. Well sheltered, it was appreciated by sailors (Agay means “favourable” in Greek).
With the arrival of the railway in 1860, many artists stopped in Agay: the painter Louis Valtat, composer Vincent d'Indy, writers Guy de Maupassant and Maurice Donnay stayed here, as did Saint-Exupéry (don't miss the fountain dedicated to The Little Prince, erected in his honour). Albert Cohen set part of the action of Belle du Seigneur here.
Well sheltered between Cap Dramont and Pointe de la Baumette, the Bay of Agay is a natural gateway to the Esterel massif.
Its geographical features make it a very popular place for sailors (Agay also means “favourable” in Greek). You will appreciate its three fine sandy beaches, the summit of Rastel and its red rocks, overlooking the bay and offering breathtaking panoramic views.
Agay also has a small harbour with 166 berths, some of which may be available for visiting boats, as well as a designated anchorage area.
SAINT RAPHAËL TOWN CENTRE AND OLD TOWN
The narrow, shaded streets that make up the old town are all that remain of the former “village district”, where the farmers of Saint-Raphaël once lived.
Every day, this neighbourhood hosts a flower and vegetable market where you will find only typically Provençal produce.
A little further on stands the Romanesque church, listed as a historic monument, which was enlarged in the 18th century but originally built in the 12th century! Its former presbytery now houses the Saint-Raphaël Archaeological Museum. Its 22-metre watchtower, dating from around the 14th century, offers a splendid panoramic view.
The “Marine Quarter”, once frequented by the town's fishermen, gradually developed into a seaside resort. A casino and numerous villas were built there to create an attractive town centre.
