“Agay is a paradise where even the dust is fragrant.” –
Agay, set in one of the most beautiful bays on the coast between Cap Dramont and Pointe de la Baumette, is the natural gateway to the Esterel. It offers three fine-sand beaches and a terraced area with access to the sea over the rocks. Very sheltered, it was popular with sailors (Agay means “favourable” in Greek).
With the arrival of the railway in 1860, many artists stopped in Agay: the painter Louis Valtat and the composer Vincent d’Indy, the writers Guy de Maupassant and Maurice Donnay stayed there, as did Saint-Exupéry (don’t miss the Fountain for the Little Prince, erected in his honour). Albert Cohen set part of the action of Belle du Seigneur here.
Well sheltered between Cap Dramont and Pointe de la Baumette, the Bay of Agay is a natural gateway to the Esterel massif.
Its layout makes it a place much appreciated by sailors (Agay means “favourable” in Greek). You will enjoy its three fine-sand beaches and the summit of the Rastel with its red rocks, overlooking the bay and offering a breathtaking panorama.
Agay also has a small harbour area with 166 berths, a few of which are available for visitors, as well as an organised mooring area.
SAINT-RAPHAËL
TOWN CENTRE AND OLD TOWN
Of the former “village quarter” where the farmers of Saint-Raphaël once lived, there remain today the narrow, shaded lanes that make up the old town.
Every day, this district hosts a flower and vegetable market where you will find only typically Provençal produce.
A little further on stands the Romanesque church, a listed historic monument, which was enlarged in the 18th century but built in the 12th! Its presbytery now houses the Archaeological Museum of Saint-Raphaël. Its 22 m watchtower, dating from around the 14th century, offers a splendid panorama.
The “Quartier de la Marine”, once frequented by the town’s fishermen, gradually turned into a seaside resort. A casino and numerous villas were built there to create a genuinely attractive town centre.
Points of interest
Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Victoire: a building constructed by Pierre Aublé between 1882 and 1889, representative of the Romano-Byzantine style so fashionable in the Belle Époque.
Museum of Prehistory and Underwater Archaeology: it holds collections from the local heritage, from prehistory and from Roman antiquity, originating from underwater excavations.
Louis de Funès Museum: more than 350 documents on display, including personal photographs, photographs from film sets and films, drawings notably by Louis de Funès, letters such as those from Jean Anouilh, as well as film extracts, some of them previously unseen. Digital tour of the museum.
Promenade des Bains: this promenade was built between 1880 and 1882 under the name “Terrasse des Bains”. It can be considered to mark the beginning of the tourist era in Saint-Raphaël.
Jardin Bonaparte: commanding position over the bay and the old port, with 20,000 m² of gardens. Its central part is laid out as a public square with children’s play areas.
